What about TexShop and iTexMac?
While not exactly "word processors" in the common understanding, that's what I use for laying out text, so...

(La)Tex and vim

Or, in my case, vi (actually vim) to edit latex documents, and TeXShop to process them.

Mainly TexShop, and TextEdit as a strong second when layout doesn't matter (at all or maybe just at the time of writing; sometimes you just want to focus on the text, and forget about latex...)

Mellel

You failed to list the most serious multi-lingual/academic
word processor for the Mac in existence: Mellel! See here: http://www.redlers.com/

Mellel

I can't believe Mellel wasn't included in this poll. Although touted as the best multi-lingual word processor, I have never used it for any language besides English and still find it to be best word processor for OS X.

Having said that, I use FrameMaker the majority of the time, despite having to launch Classic. But I'm confident that I'll be able to move to Mellel in the next couple of months if they meet their feature roadmap.

Mellel

If you haven't tried Mellel, you should. I downloaded it for the Hebrew support, but it has replaced Word as my default word processor. One major advantage: long file names (and I do mean LONG!). Mellel's style handling is far superior to Word's. You can change the formatting of entire paragraphs with only a few key strokes, including font, font weight, indenting, and spacing — all simultaneously.

The guys that write Mellel also support it. It's rare that I need their support, but great support is only an e-mail away. I've never had to wait more than 24 hours for a helpful response.

You owe it to yourself to try Mellel.

Well, it wasn't listed because ... until this poll was published, I'd never heard of it! I'll definitely give it a look-see based on the strong results here.

That makes some sense. Using emacs or vi for a word processor means you don't want a lot of features found in more typical word processors, and using emacs and being a person who doesn't "want a lot of features" is nearly an oxymoron. ;-) If you asked about using an editor to program in, I bet the ratio would be quite different.

Me too
Authored by: zacht on Dec 03, '03 08:06:47AM

Nowadays TeXShop. I used to use BBEdit Lite and OzTeX. When I started using OSX, OzTeX had problems with external editors, or at least the setup wasn't easy enough for me to figure out. Now it works fine, but I haven't gone back. Maybe some day soon, we'll see...

Word processors...
Authored by: DavidRavenMoon on Dec 09, '03 01:19:30PM

Text editors and word processors are two different things! (As are page layout programs.) I use Word for word processing, BBEdit or TexEdit for editing text, and QuarkXPress or InDesign for page layout. Lately I find myself using TextEdit quite a lot too. After you get over that it's not SimpleText, it actually does some interesting things!

I use quark too. Both in Classic and in OS X. I also have been seen using InDesign... Shhh.

Why? I like them and I hate word processors.

VoodooPad
Authored by: fortrandragon on Dec 03, '03 12:43:49PM

I find I actually write more stuff -- quick notes, ideas, etc. -- in VoodooPad than anything else. The ease of linking concepts together makes it just stellar for the way I work.

Now, if I need to do something formal -- resume, cover letters, etc. -- MS Word v.X is the tool I use. I use it simply because of I need full compatibility with the Windows world, not for any features Word has that others don't. (Whenever OOo goes Aqua I'll probably switch to that.)

LyX

LaTeX is great, and for the uninitiated LyX makes it very easy to use.
I highly recommend trying it out--www.lyx.org.

LyX
Authored by: alibaba on Dec 04, '03 04:29:54PM

'very easy' is a little excessive. When beginning with LaTeX (from used to Word), I've tried LyX and TeXmacs but soon dropped them and found easier to type the LaTeX code by hand with the help of iTeXMac than to try to understand how to deal with LyX or TeXmacs.

TexEdit v. TextEdit
Authored by: dcclark on Dec 04, '03 01:25:41PM

Definitely! I've used Tex-Edit for years and it's perfect for my needs -- especially CR/LF conversions since I go between Windows, UNIX, and the Mac OS linefeeds all the time.

You can find Tex-Edit at http://www.tex-edit.com/

Tex-Edit Plus
Authored by: WhiteDog on Dec 04, '03 04:36:45AM

I use Tex-Edit Plus the most. It is faster than Word for quick notes (I do tech support so I take a lot of notes) and has the added advantage that I can read files saved in Tex-Edit Plus format with the OS 9 version of the app when I find myself in that environment. It can also save files in Simple Text format which is helpful when I have to take my notes to an older Mac for troubleshooting and maintenance. Of course, for heavy duty writing, I use Word if I expect other people may need to read what I write. And then there's Eudora: I do a lot of e-mail correspondence and many an essay began in a rambling e-mail conversation.

Authored by: Morgoth on Dec 11, '03 07:14:26PM

I had never heard of Mellel until reading the comments on this poll, but after having taken a serious look at it I am very impressed. It put Word to shame. I wish I could vote again. TextEdit, my previous editor of choice, doesn't hold a candle to this gem.

Typewriter!
Authored by: kal_zakath on Dec 13, '03 11:18:13AM

I haven't gotten my computer to school yet, so I've been doing all my writing on an old typewriter. It has advanced features like built-in white-out and three settings for line spacing. I did some benchmarks and somehow my typewriter is still more powerful than a new Wintel, and it hasn't crashed once.

And to all of the children...
Congratulations!
