Well worth it

There isn't one thing I can point to as being a must have, but all the tweaks, faster performance and updates to apps make it well worth it.

I gave it a "7"....

because those networking bugs (mounted servers sometimes but not always showing on desktop; "alias could not be resolved"-bug; can't see SMB networked drives, only servers etc.) have to be adressed. Otherwise, I'd have given it a "9".

i don't like it because bejeweled slowed to a crawl, my epson sp820 not working, and response times too slow. what's good about panther for the casual user?

Check out the Apple Discussion forums for tips (especially from AllOSX.com) on getting your printer running.

There must be something wrong with your install. I'm running Panther here at work on a G4/400, with 512 MB of RAM, and it's much faster than Jaguar was on the same machine, and feels about the same as running OS 9 on this machine! On my G4/466 with 1 GB at home, it's even much faster.

I haven't had any issues with Panther, except having to reinstall the drivers for my M-Audio Audiophile 2496 sound card, and when I first installed the upgrade my Epson SP 870 wasn't in the Printer Setup Utility's printer list. But all I had to do was add it and it works great!

I'd suggest you run the installer for Panther again.

Panther gave my iBook (Dual USB) 600 mhz machine a new lease on life! The performance increase was more than worth it.
I was also pleasantly surprised (aw heck, amazed) at how well all my settings, from the AddressBook to my network configs, were all kept intact.
Lovely.

FireWire and Palm
Authored by: jhaffner on Nov 03, '03 02:02:13PM

Very nicely done. I like the improvements to the Finder (no flames about appearance, please) and especially the threaded view in Mail.app.

The FireWire troubles are the main thing that lowered my rating. I am assuming that heads are rolling at Apple over the potential data loss.

Palm Desktop (4.1) is crashing every time I quit. I'm assuming that's a result of some weird Palm bug, not Apple's fault.

All in all, a good, snappy, solid release for what I do.

automounter/NFS
Authored by: Morth on Nov 05, '03 05:53:11PM

I'm having huge problems with the automounter/NFS so pulled 3 points for that.

Suddenly an NFS mount, often in the middle of continous access, will stop working. I just keep getting permission denied. Sometimes I can fix it by kill -HUP the static automounter, but usually I have to kill and restart it. Then everything works nice again. It's very annoying though.

would be great if...
Authored by: dave@mmu on Nov 06, '03 12:34:20PM

Panther would be fantastic if:
My copy of Mail.app would load in less than a minute (under 10.2 it loaded in 1 bounce)
My copy of iChat loaded in less than 3 mins (again, used to be instant)
Safari seems to want to take ages creating any new bookmarks.

This is a FRESH installation of 10.3, not an upgrade.. Weird..

Otherwise a 10!

Dave

This is the fastest Mac OS X version, I have used! Its nearly as fast as OS 9 and any Windows on a P-4... Its a good job by Apple. I don't really understand why some have speed problems. My config is 667 MHz G4 PowerBook with 756MB RAM. Its nearly perfect now!
