I actually have 1.5GB as I type, but another 512MB module is on the Fedex truck, and will be installed by evening, bringing me to 2.0GB.

1280 in a 450 Cube

2 of the 512's and one 256, Cube is running GREAT under 10.3.3 ! As long as I'm here, I want to heap praises on Apple. This 3 1/2 year old machine is a real workhorse and can do it all. My PC friends wonder in amazement at this indestructable little computer. So when are they going to make a G5 Cube?

1280 in a 450 Cube

That sounds sweet. To add to this I am running a PowerMac 9600/200MP with a PowerLogix G4/700 and 640 MB RAM and I as well feel that an 8 year old machine that is now my mainbserver is a GREAT investment.

I bought it off eBay and paid 1200 for it 4-5 years ago (A little steep for sure but you can really get caught up in those bidding wars, much to my wallet's dissapointment!)

THANK YOU APPLE!

1280 in a 450 Cube

My two cubes function quite well as well but I don't think I would buy another one. With all of the external devices I have hooked up to this thing it takes up the same desk space as my G4 450 DP. Which seems almost twice as fast under 10.3.4 than either of my Cubes, except at the login window. Strange...

Same incrementally increasing size as usual on 10.3:

% ls -ls /var/vm
total 524288
0 drwx--x--x 10 root wheel 340 7 Jun 13:37 app_profile
131072 -rw------T 1 root wheel 67108864 7 Jun 13:37 swapfile0
131072 -rw------T 1 root wheel 67108864 7 Jun 17:52 swapfile1
262144 -rw------T 1 root wheel 134217728 8 Jun 09:04 swapfile2

... but they're still created "too often" even with 1.5GB RAM. :-(

Heh, I think he was joking about your 1.5MB, as stated in your original post. ^_^

640 MB
Authored by: KRC on Jun 04, '04 10:44:08PM

I got 640 MB in this iBook G4. (128 MB built-in + 512 MB) ... I might replace the 512 stick with a 1 GB stick before the end of the year ... but that's just a maybe.

I don't have much, but my RAM cost more than your RAM neeeeh :P

480MB in an Umax S900 running Panther and an 8500 running Panter with 784MB in it.

I'll be replacing these with some Beige G3 machines as soon as I get them over 500MB of RAM each. I should write a book, "Starving college student's guide to forcing old machines out of retirement."

I think it'll sell well. ;)

Not Enough RAM !?!!!!
Authored by: col_harris on Jun 09, '04 02:23:52AM

I'm originally a PC user but recently purchased a nice G4 Ti PowerBook that kicks arse. It came with 256Mb, so I quickly upgraded to 768Mb. Unfortunately to my amazment that is still not enough.

The PC machines I work on at home and at work both have 1Gig but I rarely see them use much more that 750Mb at any time.

My PowerBook on the other hand likes to each up the RAM like it was a pile of hash cookies and then gets the muchies and starts eating up my hard drive space with swap files. I also running the same programs I would on my PCs. Why are the macs so RAM hungry??

There doesn't seem to be much of a solution except to buy more RAM. However the price of a 1Gig ram chip for a Ti laptop is out of my price range so it looks like I'll have to live with my unsatisfied ram hungry mac for the
little longer.

P.S Those of you that have 4Gig+, you don't need all that!! How about giving some to me ;-D

I've found that, no matter how much RAM you put in a Windows machine, you see little or no improvement in speed. With Macs, additional memory, especially lots of additional memory, the speed increase is significant.
