Which we[b] browser do you use most?

i ticked firefox, reluctantly. their aggressive release cycle is obviously placing stress on their ability to test their software. a number of my add-ons/plugins either don't work or tend to crash in their sandboxes. not cool. the feature creep is bad enough. the feature creep and an unsustainable release cycle is death ....

I'm not the parent commenter, but - I (reluctantly) keep coming back to Firefox because, as a web developer, I need certain features it has like the error console and DOM inspector. The analogs for these features available on Safari are not fully baked.

And Chrome... is just a mess, designed at the whim of its developers with no weight given to feature requests from users (read their bug tracking system - it's eye opening).

I dunno... looking at the poll results, all I can conclude is the majority haven't tried OmniWeb.

The management of tabs puts it head and shoulder above everything else as far as I'm concerned.

Safari is too lacking in features; Firefox is a leaky, buggy mess; the rest... nah. OmniWeb all the way.

No association with Omni... just a fan.

I also am a big fan of OmniWeb; however until it's updated to work with recent versions of 1Password it's kind of left out in the cold for me.

I know it's being worked on but it's liable to take a while. Maybe by the next time this poll is run. :)

I was also a big OmniWeb fan since several years. However if you look at their forums this browser is not longer fully supported.
Much worser: more and more pages do not render correctly (while Safari is fine) or even crash the app..

The killer for me was the broken Java with latest Java engine from Apple. I had to switch to Safari, its really a pity :-(

I used IE from '02 until the Safari beta came out. I stuck with Safari until '11, when I switched to iCab (always had a soft spot for it). I left Safari because of the inability to install custom search engines (DuckDuckGo) without hacking the binary or using known-to-break add-ons. I'm also using iCab in iOS, so I liked having the parity.

Bookmark syncing with Safari quit working with 10.6 and the iCloud update, which is useless anyway since iCab Mobile cannot access them. iCab Mobile can sync via Firefox though (albeit one-way), and in every OS Firefox runs natively on. Not only that, but my preferences and extensions are synced across them all too. I imagine Safari on 10.6 will be an afterthought for Apple soon.

Chrome I refuse to use because it is a Google product, and my brief encounter with it was yawn-inducing.

The Gecko engine has always felt more refined to me. I miss Safari's flawless and beautiful Reader option. I was tied to Safari for ages because of its RSS integration, but wanting to sync read feeds between iOS and OS X caused me to abandon that in favor of a dedicated RSS client (NewsRack) that runs on both platforms. Firefox has a Reader-like plugin but it pales in comparison.

I'm a Firefox fanboy for now.

Safari may not be the best in any one feature area, but it is certainly the most integrated if you have an iOS device. And it's extremely stable and fast.

I used Firefox religiously for year until their insane release cycle turned me away. How the hell they think they can break extensions with every release when they're the biggest reason people use FF, it's just nutso.

The rest are just feature browsers. I don't need features, just speed and stability.

I use several:
  • Safari for normal browsing
  • Chromium for searching, because it is fast and has a better search on page feature than Safari.
  • Chrome for when I really need Flash. (I don't have a system wide Flash install because avoiding Flash makes the web a better & faster place.)
  • Opera for Twitter & Facebook. (I have my other browsers set to block just about everything social networky.)
  • Firefox pointed at a proxy when I'm doing web development.

Speaking of 1Password, I'd love a poll asking what password manager people use. LastPass? 1Password? etc.?

Are there actually two comment threads: one in the poll and one on the main site? That's a bit odd.

Anyway... CAMINO 4 EVER!

I like Camino. I've been using it since it came out. It's simple, no clutter, looks good, is fast enough in most cases, fantastic history, cookie management, and one or two other things. There are some things it doesn't do well, and for those I switch to Safari, Firefox, or Chrome. I also use the latter three to do Javascript development, since Camino seriously lags behind in that area.

They all have their pros and cons: MAny people used Firefox to overcome problems in Safari (earlier versions). Now FF seems to have its own problems.
I find Safari these days to be highly competent. It would have to starting biting significantly for me to look elsewhere.

I've used NONproprietary, OPEN-source Firefox for some years now; always keep it up to date.
I fall back on PROPRIETARY, SECRET-source Safari ONLY when FF can't do something (e.g.for some strange reason, FF won't log-in to the local Home Depot's public wifi site; I log-in with Safari, then switch to FF for all my diddling there).
Using FF is largely a matter of principle. I FAR prefer open-source, rather than proprietary, secretive, hidden, gawd-knows-HOW-they'll-do-what-to-us-next closed-source products - even if they are (for now) "free".

I HAVE been irritated that FF dropped its allowing us to feed some (many?, most?) javascript commands to it - which I used routinely, to change FF's window-position. (Have to keep an obsolete FF 6.0.2 version available, just to quickly reposition the FF window - and then switch back to the current FF version.) Although apparently unexplained to we, The Great Unwashed, apparently it was some kind of idiotic nanny behavior for the FF "deciders".
(And no; going to current FF's Preferences>Content and checking "Enable JavaScript" and "Allow scripts to Move or resize popup windows" and "Raise or lower windows" does NOT enable use of, for instance, "javascript:window.resizeTo(1400,1110);window.moveTo(1020,50)".
VERY irritating!

idiotic nanny behavior for the FF "deciders".

Much more of the browser's usefulness seems to be determined by the "deciders" than the theoretical availability of the sourcecode. And since WebKit is also open-source (www.webkit.org), we are now talking about 'more-or-less' free stuff (maybe with a proprietary wrapper).

And if you haven't actually looked at the source code yourself so far, how much of a difference is it between whether you could do it, or just don't do it yet?

I'm not trolling, it's a serious question.

Camino does everything I need from a browser. It's the only one I have used every day for as long as I can remember.
