I'm not able to vote. May am I doing something wrong?

Hmmm. I thought maybe it was because I wasn't logged in, but that's not it. I still can't vote. I also get this "new users' comments..." note when I post. I've been a member of this site for years, so I don't know why that pops up now.

Also cannot vote. But then I would want to vote "Nothing about Lion makes much difference to me."

Oops. Meant to post at top level.

Full screen applications is a new feature?
Authored by: doneitner on Oct 22, '10 05:39:30PM

Full screen applications is a new feature? Seriously? I've been playing Wingnuts 2 for a couple of years in full screen. Started out using Parallels Desktop in full screen, too. Even after watching the Stevenote, I must be missing something because that doesn't sound like a new feature to me.

I really don't see "Full Screen Apps" as a new feature just because Lion will be optimized for them. Also the Mac App Store in launching in 2 months so it's not a new feature in Lion.

I think custom fields in Address Book would be pretty exciting…

My worry is that the Mac App Store could be the end of my Mac being the best creative tool I use. I don't want to work on a giant iPad/iPod Touch.

Of more practical use to designers would be for Apple to stop using system fonts that have the same name as commercial fonts! You know really look at what users do with their systems, as a kind of thank you for supporting them through the dark years :)

Full screen apps and all the other bits just look like the latest Sales gimmick to me. I just want a fast system that loads quickly and doesn't beach ball.

how is the App Store going to affect what you do with your computer?

If anything you might find some new & useful creative tools that you didn't know existed before. Just stay out of the game categories ;)

I don't think that the Mac App Store will ever be the exclusive source of software for Mac. It would defeat the purpose of having a full desktop OS and I think Apple knows that. There will always be the option to get applications other places or write them yourself. I do think that some corporate types would like to have the option of putting workers on what amounts to a big iPad linked to a local company version of the App Store. It would be great for security and control. I just don't think that kind of model is in Apple's thinking.

None of the above. I'm most excited about:

- ability to resize a window from any corner

Also excited about:

- possibility that apps will eventually "resume when launched," appearing exactly as it was when I last closed it. I realize this may take a long time (imagine how long we'll wait to get Adobe apps that will do that).

I guess the resume when launched idea probably came from Firefox, which can already do this. Unfortunately, it sounds like it could have a lot of potential for privacy violations because it has to keep track of what you're doing in order to accomplish the function. Now we standardize this at the OS level. Too many software companies have followed suit after Google and changed their policies to boil down to "Our privacy policy is that you have no privacy." For those few of us who do care about privacy, this gives us yet one more thing to disable.

Full screen applications are just full screen games where you achieve some real world goal.

Hey, but wouldn't it be wonderful if you could drag the titlebar down and see the next full screen application running behind it? And while you're looking at that one, drag its titlebar down to reveal a third full screen application called "Workbench I mean Finder"?

Do it.

Full disk encryption in File Vault is my choice. My employer requires full disk encryption, currently PGP Whole Disk, for all laptops. This isn't working very well because it breaks just about every update of OS X. Machines become unbootable and you have to use a recovery disk which takes hours to decrypt the drive, fix it and then re-encrypt.

The current version of File Vault is not sufficient because files saved outside the user folder are not encrypted. Lion is supposed to include full disk encryption for the first time and, presumably, it won't cause the problems which PGP has.

It is working well. Your complete disk will be encrypted and you need to provide your pw prior to booting to decrypt it. Its integration is very nice.

I think the focus on animated UI features is a bit misdirected. I mean come on, most of the features in this poll are "accomplishable" on Snow Leopard today with the right set of third party software:

The Mac App Store = It's already here so what's to look forward to.
Mission Control = Exposé evolved. It does look nice but I still envy those blow your mind Linux window managers that do full 3d and are generally able to go way over the top
Full screen applications = I agree with other commenters. Seriously?
Enhanced multitouch = Nice but surely it's "just" an input driver
Launchpad = Please add to this list: Overflow, LaunchBar, Quicksilver, Butler...

It sounds like I'm slagging off Lion. That's not my intent at all. Hopefully it'll be as nice an evolution on Snow Leopard as Snow Leopard was on Leopard. In a few months time we probably won't be looking back.

But the under the hood changes that provide better stability, better data consistency, wider compatibility, etc. are much more exciting to my mind.

For me, the most interesting features are the Auto-Save, Versioning, and Resume.
Picking up where you left off after a restart is a MASSIVE time saver.

And using Time Machine to do versioning? Also excellent.

Auto-saving should finally remove the possiblity of losing some work because you hadn't saved.

And FileVault being rewritten is a major plus.

THESE are the big deals. The rest is eye-candy.
