...only really good, because:

o 3G limited to AT&T (AT&T has lousy coverage, & ZERO here)
o display resolution requires significantly degrading 720p HD
o No IR emitter (what a great media controller this would have been)
o No front facing camera, so no conference, video calls, etc
o No rear facing camera, so no multimedia creativity
o No microphone, so ditto
o No CF/microSD/etc slot, so it won't expand to hold more media
o No direct USB connection, so camera/drive connection is annoying
o Uses cables to sync... wifi, duh
o Uses cables to charge -- a charge pad would have been great
o Bezel is simply too large; it makes it bigger to no advantage
o It's a little heavy. Just a little.
o OS limited to no multitasking, I think that's a serious error
o 512m of non-expandable memory (not storage) is tight for apps+data.

...but I expect we'll see most of this stuff in future models, as it becomes clear that competing products make good use of such features. The thing is beautiful, easy to use, and the extra real estate (over the iPods) makes using apps a lot more pleasurable and gives us considerably more power.

@fyngyrz - Your list has some false statements:

- the 3G iPad is unlocked, not tied to AT&T. Any GSM microSIM works.
- the iPad have a built-in mic and can also use the new style Apple headphones with inline mic
- iPhone OS does have multitasking, just not for 3rd party apps. While I understand what you mean, saying it does NOT support multitasking is incorrect.
- It only has 256MB of RAM, not 512MB.

nice summary, the list could go on, but concise on some of the good media-oriented point.

iPhail once more.

Never, ever, ever buy the first release of any Apple hardware product. You will not be able to upgrade and the next release will always include things you really want. This has been a rule for at least 15 years. Always wait for the second round of any hardware product from Apple.

I don’t own an iPad, but it’s my understanding that it does have a mic on the top.

There is a mic in the iPad. It works with the Dragon app.

Not sure what makes you think it has no microphone, but I just recorded a voice memo with no effort on my iPad! ; )

Presumably because s/he doesn't actually have one and is trolling.

Isn't the 3G version not out yet and yet s/he's complaining about the 3G ?

Sorry, but some of these points are just the same old stuff trotted out by the tech media, whose basis for comparison has always been bullet point lists and spec sheets.

o 3G limited to AT&T (AT&T has lousy coverage, & ZERO here)
- It’s unlocked, so not limited to any carrier. Apple merely partnered with AT&T to offer service.

o display resolution requires significantly degrading 720p HD
- Yeah, cos 720p looks horrible. At this size of display 1080p would be absolutely pointless, and anyone claiming to see the difference full of it. It would also be a processor drain, reducing battery life at little to no benefit.

o No IR emitter (what a great media controller this would have been)
- If this really matters to you, fair enough, but it seems more like trying to find fault that something you’re really dying to do. Aren’t there enough devices out there to fill this gap, for less money?

o No front facing camera, so no conference, video calls, etc
- Hello, nostril hair!

o No rear facing camera, so no multimedia creativity
- You want to hold this thing up and take photos and videos? Also, tell me you don’t have multiple camera-equipped devices on you at any given time.

o No microphone, so ditto
- It has a microphone.

o No CF/microSD/etc slot, so it won't expand to hold more media
- This is probably fair enough.

o No direct USB connection, so camera/drive connection is annoying
- Again, a fair point, but it might have something to do with device size and/or hackability.

o Uses cables to sync... wifi, duh
- Not this one again. “No wireless, lame?” Is anyone seriously that restricted by having to plug things in to charge?

o Uses cables to charge -- a charge pad would have been great
- You can’t seriously use this as a reason to knock the iPad. A relatively new, unproven technology that would add cost and give you something else to carry around when you’re already complaining about that super-heavy cable that comes with it.

o Bezel is simply too large; it makes it bigger to no advantage
- It leaves ernough room to hold it without activating the screen. Much smaller and you’d be complaining about accidental input.

o It's a little heavy. Just a little.
- OK.

o OS limited to no multitasking, I think that's a serious error
- We’ll see this summer, and it’s a matter of opinion, but OK.

o 512m of non-expandable memory (not storage) is tight for apps+data.
- I’d say this depends on performance, which has been rated pretty well so far. Not sure what you mean by “apps+data”.

- Don't like AT&T get the WiFi model and a MiFi from Sprint 3G/4G or Verizon. Early reports, very fast!
- No one ever said it was an HD screen - Square is better then a Rectangle for a tablet - Use your TV for HD... Apple spent a lot of time trying different sized tablets and they settled on the 9.7" w/1024 x 768 standard resolution.
- IR emitter? What for? There's Bluetooth and WiFi... Wait for third party remote control solutions, I am sure they will make an IR Blaster interface, etc. Killer Home Entertainment Opportunity Here! Built a WiFi box with multiple IR Blasters to talk to your audio / video equipment and code an iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad app to control it all.
- Again with the cameras... Give it up, the suspected bezel camera mount is really for the ambient light sensor - Either third party clip on camera with dock connector or a future revision iPad...
- Of course there is a Microphone.
- There is in fact an accessory adapter for SD and another for USB. - How often do you really need to plug in a digital camera or memory card?
- Sync's over USB rather then WiFi or BlueTooth - Hmmm Security? - Still sync's with MobileMe.
- Charge Pad? I am sure someone will make one but I bet it will need a dock connector of sorts - Holds a charge for a really long time so no problem using it all day and docking it at night. Charge pad's are better for pocket sized devices where you come home, empty your pockets and lay them on a charge pad.
- Bezel too large? Hey, some people have man hands!
- Heavy? Well that's what you get for 10-12 hours of battery life, two mondo battery packs inside. What can one say? Batteries are heavy objects...
- OS Multi-Task? iPhone OS is in fact multi-task but it's limited to just Apple apps at the moment. This will likely be changed with a future firmware update. Concerns over wasting battery life and task management features. BlackBerry's do this and is main reason for battery pull reboots when an app goes berserk...
- 512MB or RAM? Really it's 256MB of RAM early reports were wrong. This might explain the lack of extensive multi-task. But on a small efficient OS you don't need GB's of RAM! i.e Linux does very well on 256MB's of RAM. iPhone OS is stripped down OS X with different API's for Touch, etc. Lot's of RAM is not necessary.

I think the original poster brought out some valid points and a few invalid ones as well... but some valid points were addressed by few replies in a lightly defensive way. Let the credit and criticism get their due...

o 3G limited to AT&T (AT&T has lousy coverage, & ZERO here)
- As already pointed out, the current one does not even have 3G. Its the one coming out soon, and that one is unlocked.

o display resolution requires significantly degrading 720p HD
- I would love to see the 720p natively supported in the upcoming versions. I am confident that they will up the resolution in the revision.

o No IR emitter (what a great media controller this would have been)
- Not really a critical product feature for an iPad like device. And Wifi with a third party app might do the job for you.

o No front facing camera, so no conference, video calls, etc
- I agree... a camera would have been great on the front. I gifted my parents the black macbook to video conf with them. Now if I gift them this, then the camera has to be separate - of course possible, but not the Apple way of doing things.

o No rear facing camera, so no multimedia creativity
- Not much of a concern, I dont think this is that kind of a device. A general camera is better for those purposes.

o No microphone, so ditto
- Incorrect observation.

o No CF/microSD/etc slot, so it won't expand to hold more media
- A valid shortcoming. This should change if we want to call it a full computer.

o No direct USB connection, so camera/drive connection is annoying
- Another shortcoming, but I think it will be fixed with a wire accessory.

o Uses cables to sync... wifi, duh
- Definitely a desired feature I expected Apple to implement. And please dont cry "security" - we give out our credit cards and more important info over wifi/internet all the time. If not for encryption, wire is as vulnerable as wireless.

o Uses cables to charge -- a charge pad would have been great
- If you mean a docking station with charging capability, its available for 29$ on the apple store.

o Bezel is simply too large; it makes it bigger to no advantage
- I wish they made the bezel a little smaller, but maybe it really is to avoid mistaken touches while holding with one hand.

o It's a little heavy. Just a little.
- This is the first product, so hang on for the improvements - the next one will fix many such little things. And just a little heavy is allright. Will help to fight off potential stealers. Bang them in the head with it.

o OS limited to no multitasking, I think that's a serious error
- This is a very subjective issue. Most of my friends with iPhones have never complained about this, in fact they have defended it, saying they really never felt the need for it, and it works where its supposed to (songs, downloads etc in the background - and they are all computer programmers). I personally would like to see multitasking, because I think its not a big deal to do it and there are a couple of cool apps which can make good use of it, without killing the battery.

o 512m of non-expandable memory (not storage) is tight for apps+data.
- 256M is the actual mem and this is going to be a problem, thats why I am waiting for the next version.

...but I expect we'll see most of this stuff in future models, as it becomes clear that competing products make good use of such features.
- You bet!

The thing is beautiful, easy to use, and the extra real estate (over the iPods) makes using apps a lot more pleasurable and gives us considerably more power.
- Thats why I love Apple products. They can do almost everything and they do everything Beautifully.

For some reason, I can't email from mobileme account on my iPad. Apple technicians are looking into the problem.

Wireless (WiFi) is noticeably faster than3GS iPhone, probably thanks to addition of 211n channel. I'm getting used to the form factor. One thing is a little scary for when the GPS version comes out in a couple weeks -- some morons will have these big rectangles propped up on their dashboards (but the maps really do look good!!).

I'm sure that only iPad owners will respond to the poll. Yeah, right - I bet the majority of responders don't have an iPad.
