eWEEK Article

Sounds like it will be this year. :-)

From eWEEK Article "Next Mac OS X Upgrade: Panther"
The rev formerly known as Pinot has been renamed Panther, sources reported, hinting that the faux-fur motif of the Jaguar release will continue when Panther ships in 2003.

Sources this month told eWEEK that the Panther release will mark another step away from Mac OS 9, the "classic" Mac OS that Apple continues to upgrade for compatibility with older applications. They said Apple is planning to "block" next-generation Macs preloaded with Panther from booting into Mac OS 9 although the company will continue to support applications running within Mac OS X's Classic environment. (eWEEK reported last week that Jaguar will shed the traditional installation disc for Mac OS 9.)

According to the Wiley site, they are bringing out an new edition of "The OS X Files" which is (and I quote) "Totally updated, enhanced and expanded for OS X Jaguar, Panther, and beyond [sic]". Looks like somebody is expecting a summer release!

Back in July 2002 when people were complaining about having to pay full price for an upgrade, spokespersons for Apple said something like "We just following our usual schedule of a major upgrade (which must be purchased) every year and a half with free updates in between. Therefore, it would seem that either they will not charge full price for 10.3 or 10.3 will appear at the January 2004 Expo or later.

I agree. I just bought Jaguar a few months ago, and I don't want Apple to hit me up for another $130 in a few months. If they want to discourage software piracy, I would hope they will be fair ot their customers.
