Back up FileVault directories to a Linux server

ikkoi is correct in his comments. The reason I took this approach is because backing up a filevault sparseimage while it is in use can lead to corruption - if one of the 8M blocks is altered during the backup then that entire block will almost certainly be lost.

Of course Apple could fix this by noting the state of the blocks before starting a backup, and ensuring any changes you make are committed to the sparseimage only after the backup completes. Until then, this (or a similar approach) is the only safe way of backing up a Filevault home directory while the user is logged in.
