Back up FileVault directories to a Linux server
Why not just setup a launchd job that rsyncs the file vault disk image to the linux server? Then you get exactly the same encryption as before, and all the data is sent encrypted without needing to install any new software. If you're under 10.5 your disk image should be a sparse disk bundle so you'll only send the changed data each time. (This may be a lot more than the minimum amount since it uses an 8MB granularity by default.)
Back up FileVault directories to a Linux server
Why not just setup a launchd job that rsyncs the file vault disk image to the linux server? The hint was trying to give a way to get time machine like functionality without requiring FV users to log out. Time machine works exactly the way you suggested (it even uses librsync to rsync the encrypted sparsebundle). However, TM only works when the FV user logs out because rsyncing the encrypted image (bundle) while they are logged in (and the image/bundle is mounted) will give you a corrupt backup. The backed up image/bundle might not even mount. Even if it did mount, you could potentially have lost little bits of random files inside the FV image/bundle. |
