Another possible iChat fix for connection issues

Yes, you are correct. If you use bridge mode for your AirPort base station, you shouldn't have problems with iChat screen sharing, or any other screen sharing for that matter, assuming that you allow the services in your software firewall (the one in your Leopard preferences). Likewise, the person on the other end has to do the same.

If you use IP sharing on your AirPort, you run into problems because this mode turns on the built-in AirPort "firewall," or NAT, which is really just a method of hiding you from the outside world. If you want to share an IP, you have to make sure you set it up as a "DMZ" (demilitarized zone) connection, which opens up your main computer to everything (effectively turning off the "firewall" used by IP sharing mode). Or you could simply forward the iChat screen sharing port, under Port Forwarding. In your AirPort Utility, select your base station, click "Manual Setup," and then go to the "Advanced" tab and click on Port Forwarding. Use 5900 as the port for both port boxes, and use the local IP address for your computer (the one that shows up in your "Network" preferences pane in Leopard; you might have to set up everything BUT port forwarding first, in order to know what your IP is, unless you know how to set up your IPs manually, which I won't go into). Suffice it to say, though, there IS a way to use IP sharing and still use iChat's screen sharing service. :-)
