Disable single-click URL selection in Firefox 3
I may get hated on, but I love this functionality of clicking in the address bar and it automatically gets highlighted. In fact, does anyone know how to turn this functionality ON in Safari/WebKit?

I'm with you. I hate have to triple-click or use Command-L to select the URL. I hope Firefox doesn't "fix" this, and Safari actually does the same in their next release.

You don't have to triple-click or use a keyboard shortcut. Just click the proxy icon (the icon immediately to the left of the URL text) and the whole URL will be selected. Such functionality gives "the best of both worlds": you can insert the cursor or select the whole URL each with a single mouse click.
Proxy icon behavior has changed in FF3
Unfortunately, the behavior when clicking on the proxy icon has ALSO changed in FF3. Now a click shows an identity info popup for the website instead of selecting the location.

In Safari, click the proxy icon (to the left of the url) to select all text.

I am not going to hate you. In fact I love this behavior of IE and FF3 so much (I rarely ever want to edit part of a URL, but rather replace 1 URL with an entirely different one), that I filed an enhancement request with Apple a while ago. Haven't heard a reaction yet.

You probably won't ever hear from Apple on that one as you can already select the URL with just one mouse click - click on the proxy icon next to the URL text. Ta-da!

Connor, I'm with you! I've had Firefox set up like this ever since I found out how to do it. |
