This is because Quicktime used to support swf files (up to version 3 or 5 or something, I don't recall at this point). Yes, it won't work on newer swf files. The last time I tried it I gave up and ended up using the Snapz pro demo to capture the swf. Pain in the !@#$ to convert swfs, but Snapz worked well. The biggest downfalls were the realtime capture and lining up the capture window. Anybody know of a better swf to quicktime conversion program, speak up...

FfmpegX would be what you are looking for:

FFmpegX doesn't support SWF files.
