If you have older hardware, the menubar transparency checkbox (which is at the bottom of the Desktop part of the Desktop & Screensaver preference pane) will not appear because your computer doesn't support menubar transparency. Apple doesn't show you the option if you can't make use of it.

For example, my Intel Core Duo iMac does support transparency, but my iBook G4 doesn't.

Thanks for the information. I figured that was the answer to my apparent lack of a translucent menu bar. I suppose I can add that to the ever growing list of reasons it is time to upgrade my PB.
