This happened to me once under Tiger.

You can check which file is causing the problem by manually running mdimport in the foreground with a non-zero debuglevel, e.g.:

mdimport -d1 /

Futher, while booting the system in single-user mode and fscking is certainly correct, you can also boot from your OS X install disc, run Disk Utility (off said install disc), and repair your boot volume

Okay, I entered that command. What am I supposed to look for in the output? I've got a whole bunch of messages about files with "no plugin."
