In 10.4.11 on my first-gen MacBook Pro, none of these extra keys did anything until I went to Keyboard & Mouse prefs and unchecked "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys"....

After I made that change, my MBP behaved just as zionthelion describes... and no key combination seems to adjust the volume in any smaller increment than the usual. I can do it quietly, or I can invoke the Sounds prefs pane, but I can't adjust the volume with more fine control.

The checkbox toggles the behavior of the Function keys.

Unchecked, the F-keys activate their OS functions, while holding the [Fn] key makes them behave as F-keys.
Checked, it makes the F-keys work as F-keys, while holding the [Fn] key makes them activate the OS functions.
