Use a widget to replace the lost SMS functionality in 10.5

I just use the free widget from txtdrop.com No need to use your phone and it doesn't cost you a text message if you have a limited amount in your cellular plan.

Use a widget to replace the lost SMS functionality in 10.5

Errr... this only works in the US (and Canada apparently). No offense, but I find it annoying how many people, on this same subject (sending SMS's without address book) just say "oh, just use widget, it sends SMS's for free!"... conveniently forgetting that a large percentage of people who read this site don't live in the US.

I've lived in Australia and the UK, and these "send free SMS" widgets are useless in either place. But I continue to see posts about how such-and-such widget "just works", when, actually, it doesn't work at all for most of the world.

As a sidenote, unlike the US, there are no charges to receive SMSs in Australia or the UK. To us that concept is utterly crazy and noone here would stand for it.

I use emitSMS, after Apple dropped the functionality in Leopard, and it's great.

I think it would be much more considerate of people if, when they were recommending a widget that sends SMS's via a website, they would just add the "if you live in the states" caveat so as not to waste the time of the people who live in the rest of the world.

Address Book context menu plugin instead

For Australians, if you don't mind paying you can use the MessageNet service as an email-SMS gateway for $25 cents per message sent, if I remember rightly. I have a context menu plugin for using it that could easily be adapted for any other email-sms gateway provider by changing the code a fraction - posted it on here a few weeks back. I'll get around to packaging it up and releasing it properly one day but not done yet. Just yell if you want instructions :) r
