Here is the documentation for AIX 5.2 that explains that sgid on a directory works the same as on Linux:

http://publib16.boulder.ibm.com/pseries/en_US/libs/basetrf1/chmod.htm#jk52a0gaco

From the manual:
"S_ISGID...Files created in this directory have a group equal to the group of the directory."

Also this page:
http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/802-5747-01/6i9g1asg2?l=en&a=view

explains the same behavior in Solaris as far back as Solaris 2.6 but indicates the idea of sgid on folder propagating group is a BSDism.
