10.5: Drag from stacks directly to other applications

What you CAN do, however, is open a stack, grab an item, and then hold over another stack (such as Applications), wait for it to spring or hit the spacebar to open that stack, and then drop the item into the App you want to open it with. Of course the preview icon is the only way you have to keep track of what file you grabbed, since the filename isn't visible while dragging from stacks the way it does in the Finder. So if you're like me, you might forget what you just grabbed while moving stuff around. Hopefully this will be fixed in the next update.

This is sort of a painful way of doing what should have been done with the Dock if it had supported hierarchies. Unfortunately you can't easily access subfolders with this method, which forces a bloated Dock. Hopefully this will make its way into the next update.

It seems "Hopefully ... the next update" is the current mantra of the 10.5 user.
