Prevent a given partition from mounting at boot

this hint no longer seems to work for 10.5.1, and /etc/fstab.hd says

IGNORE THIS FILE.
This file does nothing, contains no useful data, and might go away in
future releases. Do not depend on this file or its contents.

suggestions?

Thanks.

You need to create the file /etc/fstab (no extension), not edit /etc/fstab.hd .
