By "deleting" the file extension you actually only hide it (that is unless you have set your account to always display the extensions). Do a command-I (get info) and you will see that the "true" filename still has the extension on it.

I personally think the extensions are ugly and do not add any information that is not already contained in the icon.True from one point of view, but realize that the extension is often what determines the icon! For apps that do not save documents with type and creator codes, it's all up to the extension.

But I think the icon is retained even if you delete the extension.

Note that trying to delete a file's extension by simply renaming it in the Finder doesn't actually remove the extension, but only hides it. You can prove this with Get Info. |
