10.5: Choose outgoing server per message in Mail
Authored by: willbank on Dec 03, '07 09:45:40AM
The problem is that the message is still identified as coming from sender@mac.com rather than sender@chosen-smtp-server-domain.com

I have multiple business accounts and (rather like Don McAllister at Screencastsonline.com) I wanted to use the .Mac IMAP goodness (& Gmail's IMAP goodness, lately) to aggregate and archive all my mail for incoming work.

But then to be able to choose from which identity I sent mail using the smtp server and the account. But, given that Mail will always seem to send from .mac (or your primary server) even when using the tip in this hint it isn't possible without setting up multiple complete mail accounts rather than just smtp servers for the other identities and then having to make sure they do not ever receive.

Apparently Thunderbird can handle this so please, Apple, pretty please...

No, really. This is a healthy obsession.

You can partially address this by putting a comma and then a different email address in the Email field in Preferences -> Accounts. When you compose an email you'll be able to choose either of the email addresses from a drop down menu.

You can't change the From name with this method, though.
