10.5: Quickly enable or disable sharing on any folder
I tried this hint and a drop-down box indicated that I had to enable file sharing first. Makes sense, so I clicked the button "Open Sharing Preferences". Not only can you easily add shared folders from the preference pane but if you click on "Options" you can enable AFP, FTP or SMB sharing (or any combination) from a single pane.

Yeah, in general the sharing is improved, though I do think it will cause more problems for less technical users. Moving the SMB setting to the options sheet makes sense, but unless you know what the heck SMB is (which most home users don't), you wouldn't know to turn it on for your home network. The way it was in Tiger with "Windows File Sharing" explicitly called out was less consistent, but much more discoverable. |
