Also, you can (if you can find it on Apple's downloads site) download and install Remote Desktop Client 3.2.1 and install it - at least on Tiger, I'm not sure about earlier versions.

Yes, the download link says it's the 3.2.0 version, but what you get when you install it is the 3.2.1 version. It works from Leopard, with all the adaptive stuff working, and showing up as a Share Screen... link from the leopard finder etc; and, like Leopard, is now also compatible with third party VNC clients. I can use xtightvncviewer from Linux to my Tiger and Leopard machines now.
