This is not new at all; you could do this in Tiger as well.

In Tiger you could use either NetInfo *or* /etc/exports for NFS mounts; OS X read both and exported the combined contents of both.

Most FAQs I saw recommended using NetInfo, but I always found NI to be a bit of a kludge; complicated GUI interface instead of a simple and easy flat text file - no thanks. I've always used /etc/exports, as it's easier, and also the "standard" way to configure NFS exports across all platforms.
