This is what I have done as well.

I like using the toolbar icons. These are located in

/System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources

They are easy to peruse using the CoverFlow Finder setting. Look for icons that begin with "Toolbar...". Open the *.icns of interest in preview. Select the largest version, then select all (command-A) and copy. Now you are ready to paste this image to apply it as your new icon using the standard methods described above.

I have also replaced all the folder icons in my home directory with their corresponding toolbar icon. So now when I open my "Home" stack, I see the toolbar icons displayed on a grid. The folders that I have as stacks are Downloads, Home, Applications and Utilities.
