Sometimes I KNEW what a file was called, and it wasn't in the Locate database yet. Well, you can control Spotlight from the command line, and you can have it only search by name there. I wrote a command "ff" (find file) which looks like this:

mdfind "kMDItemDisplayName == '$*'wc"
So you could then do "ff some words" and it would find files with "some" and "words" in the filename only. Worked great, but very kludgey...
