10.5: The first 300 Leopard hints
According to this page, one of the new features in Leopard's Spotlight is "Search by Filename". They're not even joking.

Oh my, that is so classic Apple. I think it was either 10.2 or 10.3 that had 200-some new features, and a lot of them were really simple stuff--or things that previous versions of the Mac OS had. (Like, in this case, we get search by filename back. Yay!)

And the worst part is that I am actually excited about that feature. Argh.

You've got that feature already built in already (sort of). Just use the shell command 'locate <string>' -- it's a standard Unix command that's been around for quite some time, and will search quickly for any filename with <string> contained in it. Assuming OS X's version is the same as the regular Unix command, it has the disadvantage compared to Spotlight that it uses a database that is updated periodically (e.g. daily), so the most recently created files may not show up.
It's not funny. I had to write a commandline script to do it
Sometimes I KNEW what a file was called, and it wasn't in the Locate database yet. Well, you can control Spotlight from the command line, and you can have it only search by name there. I wrote a command "ff" (find file) which looks like this:
So you could then do "ff some words" and it would find files with "some" and "words" in the filename only. Worked great, but very kludgey...--- |
