I only turn off my gear when I feel the need to unplug myself from the grid completely. This happens only a few times a year, I'd guess.

One reason I leave my gear on at night, including my cable modem, router and G5, is that I serve up stuff over apache that my friends access whenever they want. It's infrequent, but I consider it worth enough to me to leave it on.

As for vacation, the above applies as well as SSH/VNC and Mail rules for sorting things out (spam, moving things to various folders, etc.) This mail issue would be a non-issue if there was a mail standard other than exchange that allowed server-side filtering, but that's just the tip of a huge iceberg regarding broken mail standards and archaic functionality.
