Poll: How Often Do You Turn Off the Power to Your Internet Connection?
Has anyone done any measurements on how much power routers and internet connections use? And how much power it used for powering up? I cannot believe the article you quoted saying these things use as much power as a fridge. What kind of router are they using?
Poll: How Often Do You Turn Off the Power to Your Internet Connection?
I seriously doubt that a router comes anywhere near to a fridge in terms of power draw (at least a regular router; I don't know what kind of devices where used for the magazine article he mentioned). A quick googling brought up this regarding routers' use of electricity.
I use a Linksys router myself (similar to the one in the linked article above) with a server/desktop machine behind it that I can wake up remotely via Wake-on-LAN. Thus only the router and (alas) my DSL modem need to stay on 24/7, while the computer, which I estimate draws some 100-150 watts when active, is powered off for a great majority of the time. I recommend this solution for anyone looking to balance energy conservation with nearly-instant availability of a home server. |
