Apple clearly states not to plug both ends into a computer at the same time. The Firewire end is supposed to be plugged into an AC power adaptor. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93339

This article is from 2003, when iPods still used Firewire for Data transfers. It's not valid anymore. Since the firewire port is used only for power in the ipods the computer effectively becomes a charger in that situation.

The article on Apple.com mentioned above was updated this year "Last Modified on: August 28, 2007". As a side not it appears that only the 5G iPods and the nanos cannot be sync'd with Firewire.
