How to clean the Mighty Mouse's scroll ball

I tried the upside-down-on-paper trick and that helped a bit - using alcohol or the vacuum didn't do it for me. But the thing that finally got me scrolling again was to stretch out some Scotch Tape/Sellotape on the table, sticky side up, trap it there with a couple of fingers, and then roll the mouse ball up and down on it, occasionally tapping it down hard to dislodge stuff.

It's hard to roll it without getting stuck, but you'll get there with practice. It's probably also much easier to do this with an assistant to hold the tape in place!

The tape method "cleaning" is what ultimately worked for me, too. Before trying that up-scrolling would only work when rolling the mouse upside-down on a chamois on my desk, stubbornly refusing to up-scroll at all with during usage. It's still not as smooth scrolling in the up direction, sometimes taking extra finger-nudges, though maybe it'll improve with a bit more of cleaning.
