Also, if you're searching for a name that appears multiple times in your address book (such as several family members with the same last name), there's a quick way to further narrow it down. Just type one or two letters of the first name, then space and a couple letters from the last name, (or the middle name, suffix, etc...)
There's no need to complete the entire first or last name, before moving on to the next part of the name. Sometimes just the initials are enough (separated by a space). Most other OS X searches (in iTunes, Address Book,...) work the same way.
