Some web apps seem to work in airplane mode
Authored by: benfsmith on Jul 18, '07 12:03:06PM

This isn't too surprising as the complete game loads initially and doesn't require anything from it after that. Many games work this way.

However, this does lead to something I haven't been able to figure out, which is how iPhone's Safari goes about caching. Using the game example, games will frequently stay on a loaded page for a while after I'm not online. But, invariably the page will be empty at some point and require a reload. It surprises me how often games and any other pages need to be reloaded, as the content should be cached. Is anyone else noticing this behavior? Why isn't it caching this stuff?

Caching is controlled just like it is with any web page, via a combination between what the client settings are and what the server settings are. I don't know what the Safari default is, and it doesn't appear to be something the user can set. That means it's pretty much down to what the server says to do, and if it says no-cache then that's what happens.
