Daisy-chain FireWire devices in Target Disk Mode
Recently I used an external FireWire as a "bridging" device between two computers that were two far apart to be connected with the firewire cables I had on hand. The drives on the machine in target disk mode mounted fairly slowly compared to how they would mount with a direct connection. I have successfully connected and used CD/DVD, Zip and other devices on the ATA/SATA or SCSI bus on a machine in target disk mode. (I suppose I could use four or five devices in target disk mode to reach an even longer distance, but maybe a longer cable would be a worthwhile expense at that point) I use target disk mode to isolate hardware problems as well. (Is a computer's quirky behavior due to a bad drive, RAM, mainboard, etc...). This is especially helpful with eMacs since replacing a faulty drive in one is as close to brain surgery as I ever want to get. It's much worse than cracking an old Mac Plus, although slightly less dangerous health-wise, since you are less likely to brush against the high-voltage CRT components. |
