Crazy FireWire story
Authored by: sladuuch on Jul 13, '07 08:45:17AM

One of the nutsiest things I've ever seen happen with two computers was a result of accidental FireWire daisy-chaining. My friend was editing video in FCP located on an external hard drive hooked up via FW800. I happened to be editing video at the same time on my own machine in iMovie. All of the sudden, iMovie flipped out and began to display the contents of his screen as a video capture source! We were floored--until we realized that my computer had been left connected to his hard drive via FW800 as well. Then it hit us that the daisy-chaining effect had made iMovie believe that a FireWire camera had been plugged in! The coolest part was that I could see on my screen the edits he was making in real-time. Bizarre and awesome.

Yes, crazy things can happen. I once had my powerbook connected to my desktop with a firewire-cable and tcp/ip over firewire. While copying huge files I put my iPod in the Dock (connected to my desktop) to charge the battery.

What happened then was that my desktop started syncing the iPod and afterwards disconnecting it, while simultaneously the powerbook mounted the iPod as well, starting itunes etc. This eventually corrupted the disk to the level that I had to restore the iPod from scratch and re-sync my whole library....
