After trying out Aquamacs and finding it much too slow for my liking I was on the search for hints on compiling and also ran across this (which seems to work a bit better, in fact). What about the Carbon Emacs that Apple provides a link to?

Probably build off of the same sources as most or all of the other versions listed in this thread. If you don't need X Windows support, there's no need to build from source. (And if you're satisfied with only running in a terminal window, using the copy that comes with the BSD package will be enough.)
