I would do cp -pr.

The 'p' tells cp to preserve as much (Unix) file metadata as it can. File mod and access times are the ones I'd really care about there.

cp won't copy hard links correctly -- but your iPhoto library shouldn't have any.

It's supposed to copy resource forks now, as others have said. And CpMac and MvMac are deprecated, as mentioned above.

Frustratingly, very few tools will actually make a perfect copy of all Mac metadata. cp is not one of those few tools. I don't think it will matter for the iPhoto library, though. (ditto and CpMar aren't perfect, either. Actually, the only one I'm aware of that is perfect is SuperDuper! In most cases, they'll all be fine, but everything does lose some metadata except SuperDuper!).
