10.4: Use a Bluetooth personal area network (PAN)
Authored by: miguelito on Apr 01, '07 08:37:14AM

Will clarify a bit (I thought the subject was clear enough but anyway)

BT = Bluetooth
PAN = Personal Area Network
DUN = Dial-Up Networking

BT PAN is available in all Windows Mobile devices using version AKU3 (or later). That's the BlackJack, the Q (I think), and maybe some others. It is a networking protocol over BT that does NOT require dialing a number, etc. You just connect as you do to an access point (although you do this through the BT menu rather than the WiFi menu).

BT DUN is available as long as the BT DUN stack (a file that defines the protocol) is available. With BT DUN, you will need to specify a phone number (or similar, like an IP address), an account name, and a password. Commands to the modem in the phone use the age old AT command set.

Microsoft removed the BT DUN stack in AKU3. Why? Beats me. There's a discussion about this in Microsoft's Windows Mobile dev network. Nevermind Macs didn't support BT PAN prior to 10.4.9. Just sheer stupidity , it seems to me, why would you alienate users this way? The BT DUN stack was available in the prior version, and there's no reason for the two not to coexist.

Anyway... My post assumed the thread was about BT PAN. If your phone does not support it, this thread is not for you.
