Repair a crashing Personal File Sharing service
Here is my insight into why these files may have dissappeared (10.4.x). I have seen similar things happen with mail and iCal where for example in iCal a certain calendar simply vanished - the associated .ics file dissapeared. Another case was a dissapearing mail box. These occurances were preceeded with the application crashing. My theory is that the app (or something) corrupted the file to a point where the OS did no longer see it or even eliminated it - on re-launch of the app that file cannot load resulting in odd behaviour or lost data. I have a feeling there is an underlying problem in the OS that allows files to corrupt & subsequently disappear without warning. I'm not sure how journalling works and if that may be relevant here, but I have one Mac where journalling has been turned off for years and the user data is on a non system partition - that machine is has had it's share of crashes, system re-installs & upgrades, but has never lost any user data. |
