Preview is my favorite pal!
Authored by: soosy on Jun 04, '02 12:09:34PM

I am a web site designer and I am absolutely addicted to using Preview. I use it all day long everyday. It's just faster and more convenient than opening up stuff in Photoshop when you just want to get a look at a file. In OS 9 I used Quicktime's PictureViewer which generally worked better actually. I have sent feedback to Apple about Preview and am glad to hear that a new version is coming with Jaguar (though my problems with it don't seem to be addressed from what I've read).

Probs with Preview:
-doesn't seem to open up as many formats as PictureViewer used to. I think CMYK jpgs are a problem. Some PSDs show up with large white areas where the same PSD in PictureView is fine. (not to mention the whole prob with metadata...)
-View at actual size is not actual size. This is my #1 complaint with Preview and agonizes me daily. Images saved at higher than 72 dpi open up in Preview as their "Actual Size" which means large scans show up as tiny tiny thumbnails. This would almost be okay if there was a menu option to "fill screen" but there is not. They really really need a preference to scale images up automatically rather than having to zoom in manually... picture viewer is so much nicer in this regard.

But I love Preview. It is my special pal. Try using it, like Command-H in OS X, it'll quickly grow on you!

I use Goldberg instead of Preview. It shows everything Preview does (since I think both just call system Quicktime picture-display routines), and doesn't have the annoying insistence on showing everything at the 'proper' DPI; it shows stuff pixel-for-pixel as a sensible image displayer should.

"Images saved at higher than 72 dpi open up in Preview as their "Actual Size" which means large scans show up as tiny tiny thumbnails."

That explains the mystery I'd been trying to figure out, thanks! Mail does this too, I get photos sent from one person, and they display fine inline in Eudora, but tiny in Preview. Then he reported someone using Mail viewed them too small. I couldn't figure out what was different about his jpegs until I read your comment. They are at 150 dpi.

Did you try checking the "ignore DPI for actual size" checkbox in Preview's preferences?
