One possible fix for iPods with hard drive issues
Authored by: mtts on Jan 22, '07 10:36:17AM

Might try this, though I have my own solution for this problem: open up the ipod case, unplug the wire that gives the board its power and leave it to sit for a while (not sure how long exactly, but definitely longer than ten minutes). This drains some capacitor, I'd guess. When you plug it back in, the ipod will reset itself and the hard drive functions normally again.

I don't think it's a case of loose bits in the hard drive (as that would completely destroy it sooner rather than later) but rather an issue with the (hard drive) firmware.
