There's an easier way :

Select the page's address (cmd-L), then type cmd-opt-Enter to open the link in a background window. Then close the current tab (cmd-W), and here you are...

BTW, cmd-opt click is the combo for "open link in a new window", you can add shift if you want the new window to be the front one.

Or: Control (right)-click on the link and select Open in new window from the Contextual menu. All much quicker than the Automator/applescript routine.
