Store application passwords and serials with the program
Authored by: kamath on Dec 18, '06 07:20:06PM

I'm lazy. I have a text file (kept in the parent directory of my FtpDir directory) with serial numbers/passwords. It's backed up every now and again. I also copy it to my other machine (used a a fileserver) where I keep application updates (I keep almost all application downloads and their updates. I make images of the CDs, and put them there too).

If I want encryption, I use gpg ('cause that works on my mac, my work linux machine, and my Sun machines (both the ones running OpenBSD and the ones Solaris)).

For passwords on the web, on my Sun box I have a GPG encrypted file with passwords, and a short script to extract username/passwords based on web site. I don't keep things in my keychain unless they're specific to my mac. Whilst I have .mac, I don't back up to that (I like control of my own files, thank you), and I don't use keychain for websites because I generally hate autofill, etc. Sooner or later you're using a friends machine to do something you need to do, and can't remember the password. If you never type it in, you never remember it. Of course, since I have my passwords under an encrypted file on my personal machine that I ssh into. . . I can get at it from almost anywhere. :-)
