10.4: Work around a non-functional screensaver lock
Authored by: thermophile on Dec 08, '06 03:23:39PM
I experienced the same problem and after failing to find any lasting fix, I searched for other solutions and found one: 10.3: Use fast user switching from the Terminal. While this was written for 10.3, 10.4 introduced Automator. So I did the following:

  1. Created a workflow in Automator using the Run Shell Script action, pasting in the shell script written by makaio
  2. Saved the workflow as a plugin for the finder which saves it in ~/Library/Workflows/Applications/Finder/loginscreen.workflow
  3. Using Quicksilver, I created a mouse trigger which ran the workflow when I click twice on a screen corner
Now, whenever I leave the machine, I simply double click on a corner invoking the Quicksilver trigger which runs the Automator workflow which excutes a shell script which rotates the cube and brings up the login screen. I have the display set to sleep in 30 so energy consumption is reduced. Because the login screen uses no CPU, I can be running processes in the background and my computer can be backed up.
