This is undoubtedly mentioned elsewhere here on macosxhints.com...

You can take an alias (or shortcut, if you will) of a DVD disc of mpeg or avi files and place it in the Movies folder. FrontRow will automatically recognize which aliases point to mounted volumes and display only those in it's list of available movies.

What I've done, is to take and burn as many avi files as will fit onto a DVD, put the DVD into my mini, create the alias, and eject the DVD. Then when I want to watch something from that disc, I put it back into the DVD drive, let it mount, activate FrontRow and play.
