Smart playlists for lossless and AAC files in iTunes and iPod
Try this from Doug's AppleScripts
http://www.dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=losslessaccworkflow It lets you maintain a single library of lossless files and an ipod in AAC format. It also provides scripts for syncing play count, rating, and genera between the two. Very good scripts! Chad

I like the hint, and will explore the possibities. My one comment is this...I was in the process myself of digitizing all my CDs into Apple Lossless format, when I came to the stunning realization that, while lossless, they don't play back as well as AIFF files. In particular, the high frequencies lose their harmonics and sound flat, unlike the AAC codec, which tends to lose more definition in the bass area. So ultimately, the Apple Lossless codec, as well as FLAC, are still best as storage codecs, not playback codecs if you really want to listen to the best possible reproduction. As a lossless codec, it does fully restore the best quality sound when you return it to AIFF. But the Lossless codec is really not acceptable for critical listening. Try some comparative listening - if you have a good stereo, you'll hear for yourself! |
