um, great. now i have no artwork..

iPod w/Color Screen. software v.1.2.1.
i have album art for 99% of my 400+ album collection. i sync music manually. all artwork displays fine in iTunes 7.1.
prior to trying this hint, about 95% of my artwork displayed on the iPod. i thought this would fix the 5% that didn't display. instead, my iPod now shows NO art at all.

i've tried restarting iTunes, resetting the iPod, deleting the ArtworkDB, resynching the iPod... nothing works. i can see all the artwork in iTunes, it just won't show up on the iPod no matter what i do.

can anyone help? this totally sucks. performing hints shouldn't break your shit, not without a little warning at the least.

thx,
j

This happened to me, too. However, I found the information in the Apple knowledgebase so it wasn't this thread where I blew away the artwork. If it matters, I started adding album art with iTunes 7 (and not before) because of the new display method. Anyway, it appears that the album art is still here for all the items where I pasted it into the info of the song. The album art missing for me was for all the songs that iTunes found art.

I read in a different thread that the art can be either placed into the song file, which I believe is how I did it, or iTunes has a database it uses to show the image. From what I read, it sounds like, if you pasted into the album art area in the lower left corner, it was pasting into iTunes, not the song.

One other factor that may be different from others: I put all my music on the iPod and removed it from my computer. I did this to free up hard drive space. At the beginning, I still had the cover art for those that iTunes found. After I unchecked the show art option, click Apply, checked, and clicked Apply again, the artwork was gone for those that I did not paste into each song.

UPDATE!! FIXED!!
Authored by: jbondo on Oct 30, '06 08:49:56AM

i received an email from the original author of this hint, and apparently he or she had the same problem that i had. when his hint was published, macosxhints.com decided to leave out the information that helped restore our artwork. anyway:

i'm not sure if this is limited only to the iPod w/Color Screen, but that's what i own and i did indeed seem to hose my album art on my iPod by following this hint. the fix is to connect your iPod to a mac that has an older version of iTunes (for both of us, this happened to be 4.7.1; i cannot vouch for any other versions). in iTunes' preferences, uncheck "display album artwork on your iPod", and then check it again. iTunes will then optimize the artwork (i've got about 4500 songs/22GB; this took roughly 15 minutes over firewire). when it's done, voila, your artwork is restored.

although it's probably a pain for a lot of folks to find a mac with a super old version of iTunes, this beats the hell outta moving your music onto another drive, reimporting, etc... also, all of your ratings and playlists will remain intact.

hope this helps. i'm thrilled that my hours and hours of adding artwork were not wasted, however, i find it rather careless of this otherwise great site to exclude this very important information that the hint's author provided.
