A quick method of pausing an iPod

I wonder if something similar is going on with the headphone jack of my PPC G5? Yesterday I plugged in my Sony earplugs to the headphone jack on the front, and was surprised that the main speakers still continued to sound -- I expected them to shut off automatically when I plugged in my 'headphones'. Since these are Sony, too, maybe the plug's size is an issue. I noticed that, if I pulled or pushed them in slowly, the speakers' sound would cut off as the Sony pushed partway in, but when it was firmly seated, the sound in the speakers came back on.... so I reached around and unplugged the speakers. No big deal, but this thread did make me curious about it all.
