iTunes 7 mounts remote drives automatically
Authored by: tma on Oct 03, '06 11:04:07PM

Hi, I'm the original poster of this tip.

I use the multiple libraries option, however all my libraries reside on my local machine (a laptop) - they definitely do NOT reside on the network share.

Further notes:

I have an NFS server at home which has all my mp3s on it, and I have a removable drive which is a backup drive for the server, and I take this to work with me. I use seperate libraries in iTunes so I don't need to muck about trying to get the paths right or risking exploding exclamation point syndrome.

It's not practical to have the share mount automatically on startup because 1) I take my laptop places where access to my home server isn't available, and 2) I don't restart the laptop all that often anyway.

I never used any version of iTunes before 6, and 6 definitely didn't mount the remote share automatically, so I assumed it was a new feature in 7.

NFS shares do not require a username/password for access, although a SMB mount (Windows Share) should work in exactly the same way as long as you have your username/password in your keyring and can open the share without it prompting you.

An important point might be that I have this particular NFS share saved in my "Favorite Servers" list - perhaps iTunes 7 is picking it up from there?
