Ok, I'm very ignorant but... What's the single user mode? Advantages?

That "fsck" program mentioned in the hint (it checks your hard drives for errors and tries to fix them) only runs in single user mode. Prior to this tip, the accepted way of getting there was to restart the computer and hit cmd-S during boot. This seems much easier!
